Serving to Teach -- Teaching to Serve
Food For Thought
 TC at the Beach
Is sleep a spiritual exercise? Yes, because we are not just spiritual beings. We are embodied spirits. Only God does not need sleep. But even he rested one out of seven days. God loves our bodies; he made them. And he made us to need sleep, both for our bodies and for the renewal of our souls.

Sleep is also a spiritual exercise because it is an expression of trust. Going to sleep is a way of admitting that we are not God, that we are very human, and that we can leave the universe (and our own small worlds) overnight in the care of the God who runs the universe. He "gives sleep to his beloved," said the psalmist. Or, as it can be translated, "He provides for his beloved during sleep." (Ps. 127:2)

Why is everyone hungry for more?
"More, more," they say.
"More, more."

I have God's more-than-enough,
More joy in one ordinary day
Than they get in all their shopping sprees.

At day's end I'm ready for sound sleep,
For you, God , have put my life back together.
